DEUT 7:7-8 NIV
“The Lord did not set his affection on you and choose you because you were more numerous than other peoples, for you were the fewest of all peoples. But it was because the Lord loved you and kept the oath he swore to your ancestors that he brought you out with a mighty hand and redeemed you from the land of slavery, from the power of Pharaoh king of Egypt.”
When the Bible says God is love, God loves, or that God is loving, or even that God is lovely; it is saying that, love is the power behind everything he does.
Love is not merely one of God’s attributes but his whole nature.
God is not only the author of loving acts.
He (God) is love in the very core of his being.
Our thoughts of God’s love must be built on God’s revelation about himself in the Scriptures.
Let’s focus, therefore, on what the Bible has to say about the God who is love.
First, God’s love is uninfluenced.
That is to say nothing in us can give rise to it and nothing in us can extinguish it.
As humans our love is influenced or is drawn out of us by something in the object
of our love.
But God’s love is free and spontaneous.
Our text for the day elucidates that there is no reason behind the love of God for his people.
He loves because… he loves.
His love has its beginning not in us but in himself.
He is the fountain and the foundation of love.
God is love’s source and its river.
May God’s agape love encompass your life
