To understand and unlock this statement of Jesus’ we must first understand who he is, and the reason for his incarnation. We can only understand the pronouncements of Christ when we understand the person of the Christ. Jesus Christ is the Son of God who came to this world for the express purpose of giving his is life for us on the cross to save humanity. He (Jesus) giving his life, symbolised in the blood that emptied from his body at Calvary, is the only way mankind can be saved. When we receive that poured-out life into our own lives, then we gain the life-renewing power of his death for us on the cross. Eating and drinking provides energy and nourishment to the body.
By asking us to drink his blood and eating his flesh, he was implying that we will gain energy and nourishment in our spirit and soul. Contrary to the leaders or pioneers of other religions and faiths, Jesus does not just give us a code of ethics or a moral structure. He gives us himself – his life.
