Today our text is from Ecclesiastes because the passage shows us better than any other in the Bible the reason why friendship is more valuable. Our text reveals that it’s a good thing to have a friend because if you fall down a friend can help you up, or, when you’re overcome by cold, a friend can help keep you warm. The emphasis here is on two people – “two are better than one”, “if two lie down” – but at the end of the passage the writer adds that “A cord of three strands is not quickly broken.” The point being made is that when you’re in a close relationship with another person, apart from what the two of you contribute to the relationship, you have a third quality – strength and power which is produced by the relationship and cannot be easily broken. That is “in the fusion and intertwining of friendship there is power.” Your strength and the strength of a friend breads a superpower. In the union of forces, there is always a great force.
